Founded in 1975 at Purdue University, The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was created to support and encourage Blacks to pursue degrees in various fields of engineering.  The founding members, known as the Chicago Six, had a vision of empowerment that has grown from a six member chapter to become the largest student run organization, with over 30,000 members, 75 alumni chapters, over 90 Pre-College chapters, and more than 250 collegiate chapters in the United States, Canada, and other countries around the globe.

The National Society of Black Engineers, as a national student and professional-based organization, dedicates itself to developing intensive programs for increasing interest in technical fields such as science, engineering, and math among pre-college students.  Through its NSBE Jr. chapters, NSBE aims to help pre-college students explore opportunities in the technical industry.  This program also strives to encourage more African American students to attend college and pursue technical degrees.  Members of this organization are encouraged to participate in programs that encourage academic excellence, leadership development, and personal growth.

NSBE Logo:  The symbol of NSBE has been given great thought and consideration. The torch symbolizes members' everlasting, burning desire to achieve success in a competitive society and positively affect the quality of life for all people. The lightning bolt represents the striking impact that will be felt by the society and industry due to the contributions and accomplishments made by the dedicated members of the National Society of Black Engineers.
